FM DX-ing in Bulgaria

TURKEY

Constant Reception

Turkey

The reception of Turkish FM-signals in Bulgaria is quite disparate from region to region. Although Turkish signals have been spotted in all the regions pictured above, outside coastal areas and the plain of northeastern Thrace, their reception is quite difficult to achieve and is possible only on few locations, mostly on higher mountain summits. The westernmost reported reception of constant Turkish radio signals on FM is from mountain Vitosha near Sofia. In northern Bulgaria, Turkish signals are always present on the Black Sea coast around Varna and on the northern slope of the Balkan mountain range.

The furthest place where Turkish signals can be received constantly in Bulgaria are the eastern slope of Vitosha near Sofia (Akademika hut) and the eastern Slope of Pirin (Blagoevgrad region) where signals from Uzunkopru, Enez and Adrianople/Edirne/Odrin are always present.

Only two Turkish transmitters have an important coverage of the territory of Bulgaria. One of them is situated on Mahyadag peak in the mountain of Strandzha (İstranca) near Lozengrad (Kırklareli) and the other one is in the middle of the plain of eastern Thrace, not far from Uzunkopru.

The transmitter on Mahyadag peak— signals from it can be received around Asenovgrad in the region of Plovdiv and on most of the coast of the Black Sea.

Apart these two transmitters, other radio stations can be received from Istanbul with constant reception on the coast, as well as from other towns in the European part of Turkey. Signals from Adrianople (Edirne) have been received even in the region of Sofia, while signals from Enez can be received in the southern Rhodopes, around Smoljan and Kurdzhali.
